Blubber Creek
The current proposal, which is option 2 of the Surface Water Drainage Strategy Options Assessment,
is the cut-price, skinflint surface drainage proposal estimated at a mere £0.9 million. The intention
is to cut a triangular shelf in the south west bank of the existing River Nar course to provide a
storm water catchment area for the northernmost developments of the NORA scheme. Presumably the surface will
be standard Environment Agency mown grass. This doesn't impact Hardings Pits and it does
away with some seriously non-scenic dead concrete structures. What isn't so welcome is
the permanent and irreversible loss of Blubber Creek, which represents the very last
physical link with Lynn's whaling past.
This feeling represents a definite strand among local residents: that while the Borough
Council talks of "waterfront regeneration" the actual result is the progressive loss of Kings Lynn's
historic waterside geography. Features like the Nar Loop and the Mill Fleet are plainly identifiable
on maps hundred of years old, but it sems likely that these landmarks will be erased in a single generation.
